If you are a parent whose children are of school-age, you have a few choices of what type of schooling to choose: public school, Catholic school, classical Christian/Catholic school, or homeschool. If you are an authentically Catholic parent however, one of these choices should not even be an option. To any Catholic parents whose children are enrolled in public schools, I have one question for you: “What the heck are you thinking?!”
Except in rare occasions, no Christian parent should enroll their children in a public school. As a 40-year educator, with 34 of those years as a Catholic school principal, I could easily prove the inferiority of a public school education when compared to the other choices for schooling. But why take my word? How about being convinced by the official head of all our country’s government-run schools who admits that over 80% of public schools are failing to educate students?
It is not the inferiority of the reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic standards of public schools that causes me to write about the urgency for Catholic parents to get their kids out of these schools. Even if the academic standards were better than Catholic schools or homeschooling, public schools are still unsatisfactory because they have gotten off-track in what their mission should be by focusing on indoctrinating children into the debauched, progressive culture. Parents enrolling their sons and daughters in their local, government-run schools are causing long-term damage to their kids’ minds and souls.
Public schools in the 21st Century have decided that they should replace valuable time that teachers should be using to teach traditional subjects like spelling, science, and history with the teaching of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion bigotry) and CRT (critical race theory prejudice). Public school districts have eliminated prayer and the mention of Christianity in their classrooms but they have added anti-God practices such as running so-called LGBTQ clubs, allowing their teachers to discuss their sexual orientations with their students, flying homosexual-connected rainbow flags above the classroom whiteboards, and teaching lessons that promote anti-Christian ideologies like Marxism and Communism.
Because public schools these days are not simply religiously-neutral in their policies and practices, but are outright anti-Christian, and because these institutions will bow to their cults of DEI/CRT/LGBTQ but spit on God, faithful families should not enroll their children in the public system, even though choosing a new schooling type will be financially costly, difficult to coordinate, and/or require a complete change in the family schedule.
Parents who keep their youngsters in public schools are allowing their children – for at least seven hours a day, five days a week – to be exposed to many educators and a bureaucratic system that not only promote concepts in direct opposition to Gospel values but often demonize their family’s beliefs and holds in contempt their Savior and all the Saints whom their children should be emulating.
When I earlier mentioned that “except in rare occasions” public schools should be off limits for all authentic Catholics, this rarity would be if the family lived in a conservative, rural school district where the word “God” was allowed to be uttered between the school walls, where the teachers were allowed to be their authentic, Christian selves in their classrooms, and where today’s “woke” agenda had not infiltrated the curriculum. Unfortunately, these conditions are as rare to find as spotting a unicorn since even if the public school is in a small, conservative town that allows Christian ideology in its classrooms and employs truly Christian teachers, the so-called LGBTQ agenda will still be presented to the students because it is most likely emanating into school through biased textbooks and the school library collection.
The largest textbook and school library book publishers in the world are McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Houghton-Mifflin-Harcourt, and Scholastic. You won’t find a public school in any district – big city or small town – that doesn’t have one or all four publishers’ publications on their library shelves and in students’ desks in the form of subject matter textbooks and workbooks. Frustratingly, these most popular publishers promote in their publications sexual debauchery to kids from ages 3 to 18, with their books – along with their corporate leadership – endorsing “pride month,” promoting “queer reads,” and distributing sex-suggestive books for preschoolers. You can see for yourself in these examples:
In all 50 states, you will find a perverse agenda within most if not all public schools simply for the fact that the textbook companies supplying the government institutions are all advocates of so-called gay pride. Catholic/Christian schools and homeschools can choose which textbooks, workbooks, and fiction books to purchase and can choose to steer clear of these behemoth publishers.
Most of us remember what sex education was like back in the day, and although the biology hasn’t changed, things are very different now. Today’s schools embrace buzz-words like “sex positivity” and falsely teach youngsters in the earliest grades that there are more than two genders, as evidenced by the popularly referenced “Genderbread Person.” Government-run schools push the limits as to how in-depth to get with youngsters and are not just increasingly introducing sexual concepts to very young children but also encouraging middle schoolers and high schoolers to engage in risky sexual behavior.
Here are some recent examples of how public schools push the limits (taken from “Sex Education in Public Schools: Sexualization of Children and LGBT Indoctrination”):
- One state-wide curricula includes lessons offering “sex tips” for children, such as “foreplay can be enjoyable in itself and can lead to orgasm for both partners without having intercourse.”
- One public school district encourages even pre-pubescent children to consider three types of intercourse: vaginal; oral, anal.
- Schools in one state actually send teens on a homework assignment to shop for condoms, with a worksheet to fill out comparing brands, prices, and lubrication ingredients.
- One state’s “abstinence” lesson for eighth graders doesn’t encourage kids to remain abstinent until marriage; in fact, the word “marriage” never appears anywhere in the lesson; the type of abstinence being taught is to be “sexually abstinent until in a monogamous relationship” with just one boyfriend/girlfriend.
- There are pre-K classes in public school districts that have their teachers instruct 4-year-olds, “If you have two mommies, they can be called lesbians,” and then go on to present homosexual relationships as good and equal to heterosexual and traditional man-woman marriage.
- One public school district introduces sexual orientation and gender identity concepts to third graders and have sixth and seventh graders play a sexuality matching game with terms like “bisexual,” “gay,” “lesbian,” and “homophobia.”
- Middle school children in another state’s districts are taught that doctors assign a sex to babies based on their genitalia but that “sex does not always match with their gender identity” and you should not “assume that people with a penis are boys because someone with a penis might identify as a girl.”
- The “Get Real” curriculum that many schools adopt is produced by Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business, and among other things includes instructions for seventh graders on how to use cling-wrap/saran-wrap as a dental dam for oral sex.
- A YouTube “star” associated with Planned Parenthood created a video shown in many middle and high schools that teaches lessons on “penis pleasure,” “how to stimulate a prostate inside the anus,” and “the joys of sex toys.”

Additional proof that government-run schools are growing more evil every year include how public school districts are now mandating that students be taught the apparently remarkable achievements in so-called “LGBT history” and how public schools are havens for indoctrinating impressionable children with perverse and/or unprincipled concepts, as shown here and here.
Adding to the exasperation with this degeneracy, most public schools purposely keep parents in the dark by either not informing them about sexually explicit school curricula or lying to them about how corrupt and adult the lessons have become. Moreover, students in many government-run school districts are told about a woman’s “right” to abortion in sexual education lessons with one popularly-adopted curriculum even teaching tenth grade girls how to get an abortion without telling their parents. On top of everything else, countless public schools hide information regarding their children’s so-called “preferred gender” from parents.
If you are authentically Catholic/Christian parents whose children are enrolled in the type of school system that has been proven to be better at indoctrinating than educating, you would be foolish to not look elsewhere for your kids’ education source. Enrolling in a parochial or classical Catholic school will potentially be a quality choice, and a choice that is second-to-none in what is the best school for today’s Catholic family is to turn your house into a homeschool.

It should be obvious to most adults that the government can often times be corrupt, dishonorable, and inadequate, as evidenced by everything from politicians’ behaviors to the incompetency of the IRS and the DMV. Why then would a parent choose to enroll their children in an atheistic school run by the government when there are other, superior, virtuous options?
